ON SCENE

Boston saw its second two-alarm fire in less than a week as a blaze tore through 83 Elm St. early Tuesday morning. A woman visiting the house received second-degree burns on her hand; she was treated at Boston Hospital and released later that night. The fire started at about 1 a.m. on July 5, according to Deputy Fire Chief Andrew Hayes, when a spark from an electrical outlet caught on some bedding; it quickly spread through the second floor and attic, working its way down to the first floor and an outdoor deck.Damages to the building were greater than $300,000, and the house has been boarded up, Hayes said. The house's location behind several commercial buildings made it difficult for firefighters to gain access, Hayes said. Boston's firefighters were joined by trucks from Cambridge and Belmont.Another electrical fire destroyed the showroom of the Bookcase Factory Outlet on North Beacon Street on June 28. Three firefighters were injured, and the fire caused more than $400,000 in damages. Hayes said the store had previously complained of a squirrel in the attic, and thinks it may have stripped insulation from the wires, which may have helped cause the fire.Hayes fought both fires, the second while working overtime."We seem to have had our share lately," he said. "It's kind of odd."
