The United States of America

Introduction

We live in Ohio and many of us do not know anything about other states around us.  When we watch the news or the weather, do we know where Wichita, Kansas is?  Do we even know what state is located north of South Carolina?

After this State Exploration we will all be aware of where every state is and we will have the information to help us know the United States of America.  As Americans we need to be aware of the states in our Union and how we help each other function as one.

Tasks:

You will create a PowerPoint Project that will be a reference for you.  You will be able to use it to present information about your state.  You will use the process provided along with the references to answer the questions and become more familiar with our union.

Process:

Your group will be assigned a group of states at random.  Once you have been assigned your state, you will use the links provided to search for information for your presentation.

Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina

North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia

Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin

Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Michigan, Arkansas

Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island

Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine,

Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico,

 Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Hawaii, Alaska

You will notice Ohio is missing.  Sorry :>(

**Take the states you were given in your group and do the following

(each member is to write the information down, but find it as a group)

Steps to take:

You will use the web links in the reference section to answer each question.  The answers could be on more than one page or deep into another.

1.     Find the capital, population, motto, bird, song, flower, date the state joined the union, and the current governor.

2.     Draw out the map of each state and mark the capital with a star in the area it is located.  Along with the state draw the flag, and color using the correct colors.

3.     Find one import and one export for each state.

4.     Find one interesting fact per state, as a group.

5.  Create a group PowerPoint presentation to provide the rest of the class information about your assigned states.

**Remember:  You will find the information as a group, but each of you will keep a record of the findings.

Once, you have completed finding your information we will continue to do this every Friday until the project is completed.  Once all projects are completed, each group will present their findings to the class in a PowerPoint presentation.  You will also provide a 1 page typed sheet for each member of the class on the information you found.

Resources:

50states – use this to find facts and maps

United States Postal Service – use this for abbreviations

Economic research Service – use this to find import/export, and facts of all kinds

Infoplease: The Fifty States – use this to find all facts

Around the World – use this to find other sites that help with maps, flags, and facts

Evaluation:

You should be able to show your knowledge of the different states and their location.  The study book is a guide to help you study for quizzes or extra points that could arise throughout the year.  You should be able to be fluent in these areas:

·        Recognize the shape, flag, and location of each state

·        Know the capitals of all 50 states

·        Be able to recognize the location and general import/exports of each region

You will be graded on the completion of your PowerPoint presentation.  I will look for completion, color use, and information for each state.

Conclusion:

After you have finished your presentation, you should have an understanding of the states and be able to share the information with others in the classroom for the group you are assigned.

Think about this:

How would you feel if Ohio was not a part of the union?

What would we do without California?

Why are imports and exports from states important?
