BUCKEYE LOCAL BOARD OF EDUCATION
SUMMARY

The Buckeye Local Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, May 23, 2005,  at 7:00 p.m. at the Administrative Offices, Dillonvale.  In attendance were  Mr. Benton, Mr. DeLuca, Mr. Lollini, Mr. Moore and Mr. Zelek.  Also present were Mr. Pielech,  Ms. Prebeg,  Mr. Closser and Mr. Donahue.  Minutes of previous meeting were approved as mailed.  Treasurers report was approved as mailed.   Mr. Benton gave the invocation and  led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Mr. Pielech introduced those in attendance. 

Correction to April 18th meeting summary:  Item 25 - Transfer of funds from Odyssey of the Mind Fund.  Action taken was not a motion to transfer but to have Superintendent recommend a fund into which the Odyssey of the Mind funds should be transferred. 

The Board acted on the following items of business at this regular meeting:
  1. Public Participation:  None
     
  2. Adopted a resolution recognizing the following special events:
     
    June 5 World Environment Day
    June 14 Flag Day
       
  3. Certified purchase order to Ace Reconditioning in the amount of $3,136.00 which was not previously certified for this amount.
     

  4. Approved stipends for Joyce Steffik, Debbie Sutphin, and Merri Matthews in the amount of $3500 each for additional work performed in FY 2005 due to retirement/resignation of two full time positions that were not replaced.
     

  5. Granted Family Medical Leave to Amber Basich for the purpose of childbirth, effective May 6, 2005 and extending to approximately June 6, 2005.
     

  6. Authorized membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 05/06 school year .
     

  7. Adopted a resolution to avail the services, materials, projects and personnel available from the East Central Ohio Special Education Regional Resource Center.
     

  8. Approved the renewal of an agreement with IRACS for annuity compliance services in the amount of $1045.00.
     

  9. Approved students to be absent while participating  in a foreign trip to Mexico on March 30-April 7, 2006, as proposed by Foreign Language Teachers at BLHS.  All associated costs will be paid by those participating.
     

  10. Accepted the resignation of Jason Kernahan, Teacher, effective August 13, 2005.
     

  11. Employed Phil Herrlein as Bus Coordinators for the 05/06 school year.
     

  12. Entered into an agreement with the Auditor of State’s Office to provide services in preparation of the fiscal year 05 annual financial report that conforms with generally accepted accounting principals.  The cost is not anticipated to exceed $11,100.
     

  13. Approved all Buckeye Local Certified Staff and all approved Jefferson County Substitutes to complete homebound tutoring assignments and chairmanship of Building Committees for the district as needed and approved by the Superintendent.
     

  14. Granted Family Medical Leave to Heather Andes for the purpose of childbirth effective August 22, 2005 and extending to approximately October 21, 2005.
     
  15. Accepted the resignation of Lori Jacobs-DiSabato, Teacher, effective August 12, 2005.
     
  16. Employed Albert Mazur as a volunteer assistant football coach for the 05/06 school year.
     
  17. Granted a continuing contract to Mary Lollini.
     
  18. Entered into an agreement with an Occupational Therapist/COTA and Speech Therapist to provide OT and speech services on an hourly basis to a limited number of students during the summer months.
     

  19. Employed the following non-certified persons for supplemental duties as indicated for the 2005-06 school year:

  26. Adjorned to executive session for the purpose of discussing / reviewing negotiations or bargaining / sessions with employees and employment of personnel at 7:08 pm.  Reconvened at 8:08 pm.

Administrative Reports / Discussion Items

A check has been received for the Rayland Property and sale finalized.

The high school sound system is in need of repair. Quotes will be obtained.

Mr. Pielech presented information on what is expected from a school photographer.  This is in follow up to discussion at a previous meeting.  In that the current photographer has an ongoing contract and no major problems have been incurred no action to terminate contract is expected.  However photographers employed by individual families will not be denied access to events.

We have been informed that new water lines and hydrants are expected to be installed at SouthWest Middle.  There will be no expense to Buckeye Local.

The new athletic league discussed at previous meetings is to be further discussed with the coaches involved and more information will be gathered from the league.  Proposed league to begin in 2007.

Mr. Moore reported that as a fund raiser for football advertising banners will be displayed at the field and T-shirts are being sold.

Mr. DeLuca asked for an update on the mentoring program.  Mr. Pielech reported that approximately 20 teachers have participated - some are ready to move into principalships.  We need an adhoc program to enable participants to continue their training.

Mr. Benton reported on HB66 which will require all school districts to participate in a statewide heath care program.  The bill has passed the House of Representatives and is currently under Senate review.
